Goosebumps

I finally got around to watching Slumdog Millionaire. A lot has been said and written about the film, so this post is not really a critic of the movie as far as the actors, lighting, music, costumes etc etc go!

Upfront let me state, that I loved the film! The theme of the movie is one which can be identified by everyone world over, not only in India. Not the rags to riches plot as such, but more the lessons learnt as one struggles through life and its various circumstances....

The film has been dragged through the mud in controversies, for usage of the word "Dog" in the title - implying slum dwellers were dogs, but mostly on account of how India was showcased in the film. Let's bite the bullet here folks, all of what was shown was neither false nor exaggerated - be it filling empty mineral bottles with tap water and fevi-qwicking the cap back on or gouging out a child's eyes to 'up' his begging potential!

Minor Sidetrack - I have to admit, being one of the fortunate ones, I honestly had no idea that children were purposely handicapped to make them "better" beggars :( The first question I asked my mom when I came home was, did she know all this happens and how come she never told me!

Awards aside, the movie has also managed to capture the world's interest about a plot which is so intrinsically Indian. So what if it was directed by a gora - does that make the movie any less believable?

I do agree there is definitely more to India than what was portrayed in the film - Diverse culture, people, religion, architecture etc etc. However, there is something which India has lots to offer - and this has been grandly showcased in a very indirect manner, and that is the immense powerhouse of talent within India - the actors, our very own Rahman and of course the behind the scenes technicians! Had you even heard of Resul Pookutty before this?

Personally, I did not think this was Rahman's best...in fact it was no where even close to his best...but what did give me the chills, was when people stayed back long enough for the credits to roll and hoot and cheer and whistle when his name appeared!

Whether you loved it or hated it, there's no denying that this movie has got everyone talking! Even the most pseudo of the lot - Saber Tooth!, who promptly went and bought the audio CD just because it had won so many awards and was nominated for an Oscar! :)

true true, I liked the movie too, very much, only heard of all the controversy after I watched the movie, kinda made me wonder whether whoever was bitching had even gone out and watched the damn thing.
Frankly, it was a load better than most of our local output makes me think all the cribbing is just a bad case of sour grapes.

Resul Pookutty had scored the music for 'Black.' I remembered his name because it was Resul Pookutty. You don't forget that in a hurry. Like Vito Corleone.

Undoubtedly, the theme of the movie is extremely unique, which I guess piqued everyone's curiosity....kudos to the crew
for having picked a plot which makes for great storytelling..... the first 35-40 minutes were mind blowing, i will admit..
watching the kids grow up in difficult conditions definitely reaches out to you, and more so especially if you're an indian....
the cameo with amitabh bacchan...a truly brilliant potrayal of how the country's youth feel about filmstars and cricketers...

but did the movie deserve 8 oscars?? was it really the best movie ever, that would cure cancer?? seriously,COME OFF IT ALREADY.......

like i said, the bits of the movie which revolve around the pranks of the children is fast paced and extremely entertaining..
i thought the movie started to go off the rails when the kids turn into adults, with the introduction of some kind of
a bizzare love story ...ands thats when the movie starts heading in the direction of a bollywood
melodrama....DDLJ ,at times, was more riveting ...and from what i watched and understood, dev patel was meant to portray a youth
who grows up off the mean streets of bombay...whats up with his accent really?do "normal indians" talk like that? how could the crew be oblivious to something as fundamental as that?
for me, that killed the authenticity of the main character around whom the movie revolved, the quintessential "slumdog"..

the last 10-15 minutes are embarassing to say the least, with all the tense drama associated with "phone a friend"...
pleeease, not from the guy who gave us trainspotting...

btw which game show host is gunning for a contestants blood? well, lot of people have argued that "its a movie" ,and that the
feel-good fiction needs to be "simply enjoyed"...aahh, thats what its all abo..hang on..err...
did anyone say anything about the DARK KNIGHT?oh right, thats about some dude who think's hes a bat, must be a load of rubbish...

and about our very own ARR... the music is definitely good, but again, its just another regular day in the office for the superstar..
is this the piece that has brought him of age, that has made audiences finally wake up to the fact that this guy can compose music for a living??
hell no,soundtracks from movies like Roja or Bombay, which are far better, unfortunately dont get international recognition...

What makes SDM so special for saber-tooth?

A. Most probably she isn't a ajith fan otherwise she would have known normal children were crippled for begging. (watch ajith's villain)

B. The fact that "Jai Ho" won an Oscar or was it because the westerners heard it as "Gay Ho"!!!(Milk starring sean penn about a gay activist won an Oscar, is there a coincidence!)

C.Even though the story was intrinsically indian it lacked the indian director's touch! Thank God it was done by a "gora", if not the indian director would have seen to that Latika was somehow able to reach the KBC stage in the climax when jamal wins the cheque and the movie would have ended there, with Jai ho playing on the KBC set!!!

D. It was just a beautiful movie.
