Goosebumps
I finally got around to watching Slumdog Millionaire. A lot has been said and written about the film, so this post is not really a critic of the movie as far as the actors, lighting, music, costumes etc etc go!
Upfront let me state, that I loved the film! The theme of the movie is one which can be identified by everyone world over, not only in India. Not the rags to riches plot as such, but more the lessons learnt as one struggles through life and its various circumstances....
The film has been dragged through the mud in controversies, for usage of the word "Dog" in the title - implying slum dwellers were dogs, but mostly on account of how India was showcased in the film. Let's bite the bullet here folks, all of what was shown was neither false nor exaggerated - be it filling empty mineral bottles with tap water and fevi-qwicking the cap back on or gouging out a child's eyes to 'up' his begging potential!
Minor Sidetrack - I have to admit, being one of the fortunate ones, I honestly had no idea that children were purposely handicapped to make them "better" beggars :( The first question I asked my mom when I came home was, did she know all this happens and how come she never told me!
Awards aside, the movie has also managed to capture the world's interest about a plot which is so intrinsically Indian. So what if it was directed by a gora - does that make the movie any less believable?
I do agree there is definitely more to India than what was portrayed in the film - Diverse culture, people, religion, architecture etc etc. However, there is something which India has lots to offer - and this has been grandly showcased in a very indirect manner, and that is the immense powerhouse of talent within India - the actors, our very own Rahman and of course the behind the scenes technicians! Had you even heard of Resul Pookutty before this?
Personally, I did not think this was Rahman's best...in fact it was no where even close to his best...but what did give me the chills, was when people stayed back long enough for the credits to roll and hoot and cheer and whistle when his name appeared!
Whether you loved it or hated it, there's no denying that this movie has got everyone talking! Even the most pseudo of the lot - Saber Tooth!, who promptly went and bought the audio CD just because it had won so many awards and was nominated for an Oscar! :)

Random and me!
So there's this crappy game on facebook going on..where everyone has to post 25 random things about themselves..i got tagged twice to do it...and i never thought i would do it..but what the hell..I'm pretty jobless :)
and in case ur wondering..why I'm not writing it on FB..i got a couple of cousins on my list..and well..they cant know all this abt me! it would lead to many issues in the gopal family! ;)
and anycase im wonderin..not many of u know me..so it really doesnt matter how random i really am!! ;)
so in no particular order...
1) most people think im a very friendly person and that I like meeting new ppl and making new friends! I'm not friendly..in fact I;m fairly anti social..and I think I'm too old and set in my ways to make new friends!
2) I pretty much lead a double life...Im as conservative and orthodox and set in traditions as any ambujam maami..at the same time...I love my vodka, chicken tikka and the occasional classic mild! these two alter ego's of mine have never clashed (thankfully!)..well..except once on krishna jayanthi in 2004..but we'll leave that for a later post ;)
3) If ever I audition for American Idol..I would sing..Be with You by Mr. Big...I have it down pat..including the hand movements and the facial expressions for when there is a close up!
4) I have a thing for fair guys...till now all the men i've ever had a crush on have been fair...
5)It doesnt bother me that I;m fat! I'm grateful for the face that I have...if i had to choose between having a hot sexy figure and an ugly face or being fat and my current face..i would choose being fat any day!
6) I have many circles of friends whom I dont like to mix...office, school, college - b.com, college - other depts, MBA, ex-office, etc etc...im diff with each group of friends and not all of them know me know me...but there are a select few who know me completely!
7) I have a nice job that pays good money...just so happens I;m reasonably good at my job too...but I;m not at all career oriented...I totally see myself sittin at home to take care of my future children! :)
8) The first thing I notice about a guy is his hands...his fingers more specifically..and then his neck...and i always judge a guy by how good or bad he smells..I have met perfectly nice men..who rather unfortunately may have had a bad B.O day, the first time they met me...no matter how good they might have smelt on other occasions..I only remember the bad smell
9) Yeadu (Malai...for the non-tamilians here..though I;m not sure how many of them read my blog!) makes me vomit..i'm not kiddin...serve me tea/coffee/lassi with yeadu in it and i'll throw up instantly!
10) I have an awesome collection of perfumes...i use perfumes till there are like 4-5 sprays left...and then stop..cos I dont want to throw the bottle..so i have a cupboard full of near empty perfume bottles
11) i have a huge fetish for silver jewellery..rings and ear-rings are my biggest weakness..not so much necklaces
12) I;m more scared of my elder brother than I am of my parents..(spack..i know ul have some choice comments for this one)
13) I adore my sis-in-law..she really is a very nice girl..and I'm glad she married my brother..touch wood..we get on very well for now...remind me to blog abt this 10 years from now :P..
14)I love to dance..and I'm pretty decent at it.sadly..old age has taken over..so these days I can dance only after I've had a couple of potent drinks..mind u..when I say dance..i mean..pelvic thrusts..and shakin all wat i got coupled with vulgar facial expressions ;)(i would make an excellent item number girl) ;)
15) i was a very different person 3-4 years ago..i think I have changed for the better now...even if i say so myself :P
16) in this whole arranged marriage process..i've said no to boys and also been said no to! trust me..both are not fun!
17) though i pass judgement...i dont judge people...does that make sense, or am i sayin it wrong!
18)I've dated some hottttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt lookin men...but that's all it was...dating...the ones I really loved were all awesome people..and not really the hot kinds..well..they were to me..but im guessin not to the general public!
19) I'm pretty religious..I pray every morning..I have these set of shlokas my mom taught me when I was young...I love going to temples..the peace and calm it brings me is unparalleled..even in tirupati..inspite of waiting in queues for hours..and being shoved around..and jargandied...that 2 secs i get in front of God, makes it allllllllllllllll worth it...
20) I hateeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee email forwards..esp the kinds which tell me that I have to forward the mail to x number of ppl within 5 mts to avoid having bad sex!!! wat the fuck!!!!
21) Nothing irritates me more when ppl say I look like a north indian and then are surprised when I dont take it as a compliment!
22)I speak a hash of madras, galeej bashai and sparsht iyengar tamil...i pretty much get it wrong all the time!
23) I talk fast, eat fast, think fast, type fast and drive fast....generally I do things at a quickened pace compared to others!
24)I would love the opportunity to kick a man in his nuts!
25) I absolutely trip on toilet humour...fart jokes make me laugh, any time of the day!
phewwwwwwwwwwwwww..not bad...i thought it would be tough...i think i could have gone on for a few more!!! :)
I think the rules of the game require me to tag other ppl so they too cant write 25 things abt themselves..i wont impose...pls feel free to write..but only if u want to..not cos i asked you to! :)
